Transit Strike

Posted in General at 8:02 am by Dave Fowler

From my window as I look at the FDR coming in right next to the East River I can see traffic backed up as far as I can see. Living up on 94th St gives me a great view of the traffic trying to get into the city, and gives me a greater perspective on why the choice to work from home today was the right one. If you were watching channel 12 in CT last night and thought you were seeing things you weren’t. That was my ugly mug on the TV last night being interviewed about the strike. Apparently my new title is David Fowler - Commuter.

Happy Holidays!!!

I hate designers

Posted in General at 12:25 pm by Dave Fowler

Admitadly my site is a piece of shit. Hell, look at when it was last updated, 6 months ago….talk about web site death. Now that I’ve just spent the afternoon looking at some of my old co-workers websites (Jeff Hyde and Todd Roeth) and I’m realizing how much I absolutely hate designers. It has nothing to do with personalities, because personaly I can’t think of anyone that I would rather spend the afternoon sucking down barley pops with or hitting the slopes with. However, the one thing they do is make me realize that not only have I not updated my site in forever, it doesn’t even look good.

Sunny England

Posted in General at 10:08 am by Dave Fowler

Hello from sunny England. Clearly its been a while since I’ve updated this, which has been a trend ever since I got a blog on my site. However, for once, I have news that is somewhat interesting. So as of the end of May I have been living with my parents in New Canaan. I’m not going to say that there’s anything horrible about that except for the fact that I’m 29 yrs old. Having returned from Colorado my mission was to find some sort of gainful employment. Which lucky for me I found pretty quickly with Mediasurface.

Even quicker than finding the job, was how quickly they put me on a plane across the pond for training. I’ve been in the UK for almost 3 weeks now, and am set to return for 4th or July weekend (I wonder if they didn’t want a yank over here for that holiday). Anyway, its been nice, although I haven’t really seen the sites as much as I would like except for those in Newbury. Which there aren’t that many. The beer is good and the food is not. So I can’t wait to come back.

Went to London last weekend, but I’m tired of writing at this point so that will have to wait for a later date.

struts config files and the & symbol

Posted in Tech, Struts, XML at 10:07 am by Dave Fowler

Last night I was working on a site that I was developing when I hit a little snag. I was trying to pass some parameters in an actionforward url. Well, passing one parameter is easy and you won’t run into any problems with it because it looks like the following

/link-url?parameter=parameter-value

However, if you try and pass two parameters you will need to type something like,

/link-url?parameter1=parameter-value1&parameter2=parameter-value2

The problem turns out to be the &. The xml parser thinks that a special character is being passed in and therefore isn’t able to parse the rest of the xml document. To solve this problem the quick fix is to use the special character version “&” so that your config file looks like

/link-url?parameter1=parameter-value1&parameter2=parameter-value2

Laptop back

Posted in Tech at 3:54 pm by Dave Fowler

So apparently if you leave your laptop upside down for a long time, and then wait about 24hrs to start it back up with works. Its the things like this that put the fear of God into you about backing up your data.

Laptop Fried!!!!

Posted in Tech at 9:30 am by Dave Fowler

Sorry if I haven’t responded to anyone’s emails or pretty much talked to anyone in the last day. I spilled a cup of water on my laptop yesterday, which, according to the manual is bad! So I spent the day yesterday rebuilding an old computer of mine hoping that during that time my computer will dry out and work. well it hasn’t. So at least I have the computer that I rebuilt to work on, however, all my documents and emails are currently lost so if you haven’t heard from me on something you may want to resend it. Oh and if anyone has any experience bringing laptops back from the dead please please please get in touch with me ASAP!!!!

Digging Trenches

Posted in House at 3:49 pm by Dave Fowler

I’m feeling old right now because in order to write this entry I had to put a heat pad on my back. The reason is, having had my sewer line replaced in February as a side effect they ripped out many of the pipes for my sprinkler system. So I spent the afternoon re-digging those trenches so that hopefully next week I can repair those lines.

So here is my little bit of advice that can go a long way if you’re buying a house. Get the sewer line cameraed. It can save you a massive bill and a huge hassle!

St Pattis Day

Posted in General at 9:34 pm by Dave Fowler

St Patti’s day was an interesting on this year. Lori and I went to Gov’s park and met up with some friends for some green beers and to watch some NCAA b-ball games. The corned beef and cabbage was good. On to the good stuff. After wandering around downtown for a while trying a few different bars we ended up at Nallens. The crowd was drunk and happy…..especially the guy sitting at the front corner of the bar who was going at it with this exceptionally large girl. I don’t want to be too harsh on my first entry on my new blog, but lets just say that they were definitely entertaining the entire bar for a long while, and I’m pretty sure some people were rolling on the nasty beer laden floor in histerics.
